What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy focuses on exploring and reflecting on feelings through the use of art materials. The art process, in the presence of a trained art therapist, can enable clients to give shape to thoughts and feelings which are difficult to verbalise. Meanings are explored to enable a client to effect change and growth.

Art Therapy is a regulated profession and only those who are appropriately qualified and registered by the Health Professions Council (HCPC) may legally describe themselves Art Therapists.

Some of the benefits of using art therapy:

  • The use of art materials can be less threatening than a predominantly verbal attempt to help.
  • The art process and image can facilitate the gradual acknowledgement of feelings and development of narrative.
  •  Feelings can be safely expressed using art materials.
  • The pleasurable aspects of art making can facilitate exposure and desensitisation of difficult feelings.
